What is an HSA or FSA?

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) let you set aside pre-tax money for eligible healthcare expenses. HSAs typically roll over from year to year. FSAs are employer-sponsored, and for most plans the funds expire at the end of the plan year. Some HRAs may also work, depending on your employer's plan. Not sure if you have one? Check with your employer or insurance company.

Because HSA/FSA dollars aren't taxed, using them on eligible purchases means you keep the amount you would have paid in income tax. Qualified customers save an average of 30%.*

How Truemed works

  1. Shop. Add your bike or gear to your cart at shopbikesupply.com.
  2. Choose Truemed at checkout. Select "Truemed – Pay with HSA/FSA" as your payment method. Signed in to Shop Pay? Check out as a guest.
  3. Complete a health survey. An independent licensed practitioner will review your clinical intake form. No office visit needed.
  4. Receive an LMN if you qualify. If your purchase qualifies, you'll receive a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Then pay with your HSA/FSA card, or pay with a regular card and submit for reimbursement.

HSA/FSA eligible items

Exercise can be part of managing chronic health conditions like diabetes, obesity and hypertension. With a Truemed LMN, items like these may be HSA/FSA-eligible when used to address a specific health condition:

  • Road, gravel and mountain bikes
  • E-bikes
  • Fitness and hybrid bikes
  • Indoor trainers and smart bikes
  • Helmets
  • Other select cycling gear

Some products may qualify for HSA/FSA with a Truemed LMN. Eligibility depends on the product and your individual health information. The health survey at checkout determines whether you qualify.*

The checkout process, step by step

1. Add your items to the cart

Shop shopbikesupply.com as usual and add your bike, trainer or gear to your cart. Look for the Pay with HSA/FSA message on product pages; it marks items that may be eligible with a Truemed LMN. Every bike we ship is built, tuned and test-ridden before it leaves the shop.

2. Go to checkout (Shop Pay users: check out as a guest)

From your cart, click Check out. Skip the express buttons (Shop Pay, PayPal and others). If you're signed in to Shop Pay, choose to check out as a guest. Truemed payments don't run through Shop Pay, so this step is required to see the Truemed option.

3. Enter your contact and shipping info

Fill in your email, shipping address and shipping method. Use an email you check often, because it's also used for your health survey and Truemed account.

4. Select "Truemed – Pay with HSA/FSA"

On the payment step, choose Truemed – Pay with HSA/FSA and continue. You'll be taken to Truemed's secure checkout to finish your order.

5. Complete the health survey

Answer the clinical intake form. An independent licensed practitioner will review it to determine whether your purchase qualifies. No appointment or office visit is needed.

6. Pay with your HSA/FSA card or a regular card

Pay with a regular credit or debit card (Truemed's recommendation): pay in the Truemed checkout, then reimburse yourself from your HSA/FSA using your receipt and LMN. Truemed recommends this route for the best chance of a smooth reimbursement.
Or pay with your HSA/FSA card: if your card has enough funds, enter it in the Truemed checkout. You can also split the payment between your HSA/FSA card and a regular card.

7. Order confirmation and your LMN

You'll get your order confirmation from us, and Truemed will follow up by email. If you qualify, your Letter of Medical Necessity is stored in your Truemed account. Log in at truemed.com with the email you used for the survey to download it. We build and ship your order as usual.

8. Submit for reimbursement (if you paid with a regular card)

Follow Truemed's emailed instructions to submit your receipt and LMN to your HSA/FSA administrator. Keep copies of both for your records.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sierra Bicycle Supply HSA/FSA eligible?

Through our partnership with Truemed, qualified customers may be able to pay for eligible Sierra Bicycle Supply purchases with HSA/FSA funds. Eligibility depends on the product and your individual health information.*

What is Truemed?

Truemed is a telehealth and payments company that helps qualified customers use HSA/FSA funds on eligible purchases. You still buy directly from us. Truemed coordinates the review by an independent licensed practitioner and the Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) documentation.

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?

An LMN is a document from an independent licensed practitioner confirming that a product is appropriate for treating, mitigating or preventing a diagnosed health condition. Eligibility for HSA/FSA spending on items like bikes generally requires one.

How long is my LMN good for?

Each Letter of Medical Necessity is valid for 12 months from the date it's issued. It's stored in your Truemed account, so log in at truemed.com any time to download it.

Is this a discount?

No. You pay our regular price. The savings come from paying with pre-tax HSA/FSA dollars instead of after-tax income, which saves qualified customers an average of 30%.* Any sale pricing still applies as usual.

Can I just use my HSA/FSA card in the regular checkout?

Please select Truemed – Pay with HSA/FSA as your payment method instead, so your purchase is documented correctly. Express options like Shop Pay, PayPal, Klarna and Affirm don't run through Truemed. If you're signed in to Shop Pay, check out as a guest to see the Truemed option.

What if my HSA/FSA card doesn't have enough funds?

You can pay with a regular credit or debit card through the Truemed checkout and then submit your receipt and LMN to your HSA/FSA administrator for reimbursement. Truemed emails you instructions after your purchase.

What if my HSA/FSA administrator denies my claim?

Your HSA/FSA administrator makes the final decision on all claims. If a claim is denied, your administrator may ask for additional documentation, and Truemed can often help with supporting information. Contact Truemed at support@truemed.com or reach out to your administrator directly.

Does Truemed cost extra?

The cost of Truemed's services is included in the purchase price. Your bike or gear is priced the same as with any other payment method.

When do my FSA funds expire?

For most plans, FSA funds expire December 31, but deadlines vary by plan. Check with your plan administrator. If you have FSA money left, it may be a good time to put it toward eligible bikes and gear.*

I don't have an HSA or FSA. Can I still use Truemed?

Truemed is for people who have, or plan to fund, an HSA or FSA. Open enrollment is a good time to set one up; ask your employer's HR department. In the meantime, we offer plenty of other ways to pay, including Shop Pay, Klarna, Affirm and PayPal Pay Later.

Is Truemed available outside the U.S.?

No. Truemed is currently available only in the United States, and we ship bikes within the U.S. only.
